I read an interesting article positing a theory about lack of women in higher levels of leadership. If I were to summarize, I would say the author theorizes that women need to be both attractive AND competent, where men just need to be competent:

I think it is that men need to be competent and tall, while women need to be competent and attractive. Except in politics – the women I can think of offhand that are in politics range average to smote with the ugly stick. In engineering, I think that notably attractive women are given a really hard time by the men, being presumed to be incompetent. I also think that a smart woman learns to tweak her presentation to her advantage, so as she rises in the ranks her attractiveness often grows. Mainly, I think we just can’t grow beyond antiquated social biases. Women are not raised to be leaders, hence there are few women in leadership.

On average taller men make more money and advance further faster then short men… I think general society is just that shallow a pool.
